The company’s well-known tagline, “In Sight It Must Be Right,” takes on new meaning today. Originally a reference to Steak ‘n Shake founder Gus Belt’s practice of wheeling a barrel of steaks into the dining room to grind the meat into burgers right in front of his guests, today it refers to our commitment to transparency and providing a safe and clean environment for our guests.
Steak ‘n Shake has completely revamped safety and sanitation protocols across all company-owned and franchised units — going beyond CDC guidelines — to be implemented, as appropriate, including:
- Temperature of employees taken and logged prior to every shift
- Revised cash out process, including a plexiglass shield to allow social distancing
- Elimination of shared condiments on table; replaced with single-use Heinz dippable ketchup packets
- Individually sealed high-end plasticware
- Decals placed on floor to encourage social distancing
- Increased sanitation procedures on heavily used items (i.e., menus, door handles, payment machines, booster seats, highchairs)
- UV Light Sanitation
- Face shields for staff where appropriate
- New laminated menu for easier sanitizing and/or disposable single-use menus
- No-touch menu using QR Code
- Removal of vending machines/games from dining rooms
- Gloves and masks for all employees
- Tamper-proof bags for drive thru, takeout, delivery and catering
- Contactless drive thru and takeout
- Addition of dedicated spots for curbside pickup
- Dining room seating reduced accordingly by individual state regulation
- Plexiglass dividers installed between booths
We will not immediately reopen dining rooms that were closed due to COVID-19. Each location will reopen on its own timeline, not that of the states in which it is located, and each decision will be made on a location by location basis and only once it is determined that no customers or employees would be placed at risk. Our off-premise options of drive thru, contactless takeout, curbside delivery, at home delivery, and catering allow us to continue to care for our guests wherever they are during these challenging times.
